Sep 4, 2016: Under 13s take Premiership hat-trick!

Grand Final day had finally arrived for our undefeated 2016 Minor Premiers!

There didn't seem to be a lot of nerves as the boys gathered outside Spotless Stadium. Most of them seemed calm and confident. Maybe it was because they'd won Grand Finals at Spotless as Under 11s and Under 12s.

For the new boys, what an experience they were about to have!

Assistant coach Jack gave the boys an inspirational talk in the changing rooms a few minutes before they took the field. The excitement to take the field could be seen on their faces, and naturally there were a few nervous ones.

First came the formalities: the teams lined up in the centre of the ground, and the National Anthem was sung.

Then the players took their positions, and the whistle was blown. Game On!

The first 10 minutes weren't what we had planned, as the Tigers kicked two quick goals. But our boys rallied and started playing the footy we've seen from them all year.

Julian, Dinny and Peitok answered with three goals to put us in front at quarter-time. From then on we stayed in front, although the scoreboard didn't reflect how tough the match was.

In the second quarter Julian and Dinny added to their first quarter tallies, and Damian chipped in with another. South West Tigers kicked one goal, but the Goannas' defence line was strong and effective.

In the third quarter Peitok was involved in a melee provoked by the opposition, and unfortunately he was sent off for 15 minutes for a cool-down.

Max Goldberger received an injury to his hand, but we had no replacements. Like the trooper he is, he stayed on the ground and played some great footy.

Our behinds count crept up, but Matt kicked a cheeky goal!

The final quarter was great. We finished off hard and tough like we've done all season, leaving the Tigers scoreless. Max Goldberger and Julian kicked goals.

For some of the boys it was their third consecutive Premiership with the Goannas, for others it was their second, and for a handful their first.

These boys have been passionate and determined all season. A big congratulations for giving it your best, and playing hard but fair. You can be very proud to be the 2016 Western Sydney AFL U13 Division 1 undefeated Premiers!

Every one of our Grand Final players deserves a mention: Anthony Khoury, Bilal Yazici, Blake Scicluna, Damian Ballard, Darren Che, Ezadine Dib, Jamal Bednarz, Joshua Scott, Julian Di Iorio, Lachlan Whitton, Luke Erofeyeff, Matthew Skoro, Max Goldberger, Max Mansour, Nicholas Jackson, Nicholas Khoury, Peitok Machar, Roberto D'Angelo and Todd Woods.

A big thank you to the team staff on the day: Alessio Di Iorio (coach), Jack Skoro (assistant coach), Therese Scicluna (team manager), Julian Ballard (water runner), George Khoury (water runner) and Martin Scicluna (message runner).

Alessio and Jack have been dedicated and patient with the boys all season, and put up with a lot from these typical teenagers! Julian, George and Martin have been an integral part of the team throughout the season.

Hope you'll all be back in 2017, when we'll begin afresh as Under 14s with the goal of winning our fourth Premiership in a row!

Go Goannas!

August 4, 2016: Back where it all began

GWS Giants Co-captain Phil Davis and defender Nick Haynes were back where it all began for them when they were special guests at the Holroyd Parramatta Goannas Juniors club on Wednesday.

Phil and Nick were invited to the Goannas' training night to present the club's first ever Youth Girls team with their new jumpers, featuring the Giants' proud partner Dyldam on the back.

The western Sydney property group has been the Giants' shorts partner for more than four years, and now supports the Holroyd Parramatta Goannas' Youth Girls side.

Dyldam Relationship Manager Brent Adams said that the company and the Giants were both proud to be part of the western Sydney community.

"While it's fantastic for Dyldam to partner with professional clubs in western Sydney like the Giants, we also see importance of supporting community sport at grassroots level, particularly the Goannas' first female AFL team," Brent said.

"It's terrific to see AFL continuing to grow in western Sydney, and we're excited that the Giants will have a team in the 2017 national men's and women's competitions.

"With the introduction of the National Women's League in 2017 - of which the Giants will be one of the eight inaugural clubs - the girls now playing for the Goannas could one day be Giants!"

Also visiting the Goannas was Giants Director of Coaching Al McConnell, who was the club's first employee in 2009.

The Giants have a special connection to the Goannas, having trained at their Gipps Road ground and used their facilities for the club's first three pre-seasons before relocating to Sydney Olympic Park.

When the Giants began training at Gipps Road in 2011, neither club could have imagined that just five years later the Giants would be heading towards their first AFL Finals Series!
